IWalk

IWalk is an app-based educational walking history tour connecting historical events with specific places within a particular city. Testimonies of Holocaust survivors and witnesses from the USC Shoah Foundation's Visual History Archive are combined with other primary sources during site visits to convey social and regional circumstances and personal stories of historical events. Duration: approx. 90 minutes.

IWalk is tailored to people 14-years and older. Like an excursion, the IWalk app can be used either in the field or digitally by school classes as part of history lessons and includes subjects of political education, English or religion/ethics. A tour takes about 90 minutes. For each location, questions encourage reflection on historical events or eyewitness accounts. School classes can go through the IWalk as a group via a common access code. Individual students responses to the program questions can be viewed online by the teachers.

With the IWalk, history becomes more tangible, personal, and comprehensible. It enables the users to connect with historical events and to relate this experience to today’s political trends. IWalk's pedagogy promotes critical thinking, encourages democratic participation and at the same time focuses on the memory of the victims.

IWalk Cottbus:
generationE created the USC Shoah Foundations first IWalk in Germany, in the hometown of the father of generationE co-founder, Steven Schindler. This Cottbus IWalk, available in German and English, follows in the footsteps of the Jews in Cottbus, including Steven’s father, Max. Seven places in the city centre are associated with the eventful history of the Jewish community. The path leads from the past to the present. In the process, you get to know former Cottbus residents who tell their personal stories. The Cottbus IWalk was funded by the Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future".
