Unexpected Trauma –
Jewish Schoolchildren

This material provides children from the fourth grade onwards with age-appropriate access to the topic of National Socialism. The focus is on everyday accounts and photographs of seven girls and boys who were persecuted as Jews during the Nazi era. Instead of detailing the Nazi crimes, the focus is on the children's daily lives and how these were gradually restricted and destroyed. Experiences of exclusion and loss are linked to selected articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, placing them in a contemporary context. Includes a digital module for interactive whiteboards.

Online Activity: Holocaust Distortion and Denial

This activity explores Holocaust distortion and Holocaust denial — phenomena that deny, question, or distort the facts and details of Nazi-era genocide. The activity develops an understanding of the historical tragedy and supports students in developing critical thinking skills by analyzing and interpreting various sources to recognize and counter denial and distortion. Students also understand how these phenomena pose danger to shared societal values. Developed within the DECONSTRUCT project.
Computer Game: The Ilios Experiment

An interactive computer game designed to address antisemitism, conspiracy theories, and antidemocratic thinking. Players take on the roles of young people navigating a fictional online world where they encounter problematic statements and situations. Through decisions and dialogues, they experience the effects of exclusion, hate speech, and manipulation. The game promotes critical thinking, media literacy, empathy, and tolerance. Frequently used in formal and extracurricular educational settings.

Students examine the flow of information and the role of media in our time. The activity develops media awareness, helps students recognize the difference between facts and opinions, and understand the impact of fake news and information distortion. Students reflect on how social media influences the spread of news and what methods can be used to identify and filter misleading information. Developed within the DECONSTRUCT project (Deconstructing Distortion and Disinformation via Campaign and Digital Education).

This BBC film tells the story of Jewish children who survived the Holocaust and were taken to a recovery and rehabilitation camp on Lake Windermere in England after the war. It powerfully depicts the trauma the children suffered and their slow journey back to trust, play, and childhood normalcy. From an educational perspective it offers valuable insights for discussing the Holocaust, resilience, trauma processing, and empathy — including moral questions around compassion, responsibility, and humanity in extreme situations.
